The Emperor’s New Clothes

“If you change your hair color, you must change the color of your clothing and makeup so that it goes with your new hair color," is the advice of popular image consultants.

Whoa! Talk about getting the cart before the horse. This is one of the reasons the whole arena of image consulting arena is so distrusted today

You do NOT compromise or mask your skin's color in order for it to "go with" your hair. If you do, you will end up with nothing more than "false harmony." In other words, you will awe people with your "perfectly-matched" look. It will be at a great expense, however, because you will create the "perfect makeup" look instead of perfect skin.

It's time we woke up and stopped blindly following outdated information from books and "experts" about color. It is bad enough that the early books insisted that redheads wear orange and blondes wear baby pink. Now they want you to manipulate the color of your skin if you dye your hair red! It simply doesn't work that way, because you won't look better, you'll look like an orange Barbie doll.

In my more than 30 years experience as an image and color consultant, I have discovered the secret to finding the colors that make you look better. And believe me, it won’t be accomplished by blindly following a “checklist” that tells you to look at your hair color, eye color, patterns in the eye color, freckle color, wrist color and amount of contrast between your skin and hair – and to then find a color category that matches your superficial coloring.

NONE of these things will help you find the colors that make you look better. They may help you create a tragic “Emperor’s New Clothes” look that will get you compliments from people who adore your “perfectly matched” look.

Wouldn’t you rather get compliments like this:

Sandy, I am so happy and pleased with how you've helped me. I get so many comments from friends and associates since I've given up Autumn colors that it's sometimes embarrassing.”

                        Sharon Graham

“A lot of people comment on how good I look since I've changed the colors I wear. Complete strangers pass by me and tell me how pretty I look. What a confidence builder that is. Thank you!”

Betty Kay Schomburg

“Do you ever wear foundation?” This was the question asked of my client Jackie Gilmartin at the Origins counter. Jackie, a redhead, was with a friend who was there for a makeover, and when Jackie said, “Yes, I’m wearing it now,” the woman was amazed. She told Jackie how natural and beautiful her skin looked. Jackie says it happens all the time now, but that it never happened before when she was wearing Autumn makeup and clothing colors.
