The US presidential election is still months off, but everything is in high gear. This month I'll take a look at a few high-profile American women in politics.

The three women in the photo on the left are members of the US Senate. Nancy Pelosi, right, is the Speaker of the US House of Representatives. All have positions of immense power, but only one exudes power: Nancy Pelosi. Here's why:

Pastels diminish authority and make a woman appear sweet but less powerful. White is not a pastel. Professional makeup adds power, and Pelosi is the only one with dynamic-looking makeup. Lipstick, in particular, gives a woman a "big city" sophisticated look.

Dynamic accessories also add clout, as does an up- to-the-minute hairdo. Both shout "success and power."

A dynamic jacket also suggests sophistication and worldliness, an asset in politics. The pink jacket is great, unfortunately it's still a pastel. The two Senators in the back row both wear very bland garments, so their power and presence are diminished dramatically.
