Women were the ones changing tires and checking oil on cars April 5 at Casey Chevrolet in Newport News.
About 30 people learned car maintenance and repair in the free "Ladies, Start Your Engines" workshops, which were recently presented by the Newport News Public Library System and Casey Chevrolet.
The teacher was Lori Johnson, a Philadelphia resident who has more than 20 years of experience in automotive maintenance, including working as an automotive technician, service manager and instructor. Johnson had the women work together for hands-on practice in changing a tire, checking tire pressure, checking fluids and more.
She travels the country presenting the workshops.
More information is available at www.ladiesstartyour engines.net.
Along with providing handouts and helpful tips, Johnson gave away "Ladies, Start Your Engines" T-shirts and hats in a drawing. Casey Chevrolet provided refreshments, goody bags and a drawing for a wristwatch in each of the two workshops.
The workshops were part of the Newport News Public Library System's Dream Makeovers, a yearlong series of how-to workshops. Coming up are presentations on architecture in May, finances in July, home repair in September and photo restoration in October.
With each Dream Makeovers workshop attended, participants age 18 and older earn one entry for the grand prize drawing in November.
The prize is one personalized Branding for People image development workshop valued at $697, offered compliments of Sandy Dumont, The Image Architect (www.theimagearchitect .com).
All workshops are free and open to the public, but registration is required for most workshops. Register online at www.nngov.com/library/custom/onlinereg or by calling the respective library. To view the original article, please visit here
