The Emperor's New Clothes

"If you change your hair color, you must change the color of your clothing and makeup so that it goes with your new hair color," is the advice of prominent image consultants.

Whoa! Talk about getting the cart before the horse. This is one of the reasons the whole arena of image consulting is so distrusted today.

You do NOT compromise or mask your skin's color in order for it to "go with" your hair. If you do so, you will end up with nothing more than "false harmony." In other words, you will awe people with your "perfectly- matched" look.

Julie has natural red hair and bright skin. As a result, most image consultants would place her in the "warm" category Spring and permit the warm green blouse and also suggest that she can wear peach, coral, apricot, orange and Chinese red. She would not be permitted to wear fuchsia or the bright cool red that she wears, right. Julie looks fabulous in fuchsia and cannot wear any shade of orange successfully.

It's time we woke up and stopped blindly following outdated information from books and "experts" about color. It is bad enough that the early books insisted that redheads wear orange and blondes wear baby pink. Now they want you to manipulate the color of your skin if you DYE your hair red. It doesn't work that way. You won't look better, you will simply have "false harmony" with your hair, makeup and clothing colors.

Sorry, all who responded voted for the solid navy blue suit. While it is the mot polished and professional, it isn't the most powerful. Here is text from my e-book POWER DRESSING FOR MEN:
"Because of its "serious" line, a navy blue pin stripe suit is more authoritative than a solid navy suit. However, it is less versatile. It suggests business, banking, finance and boardroom, so it is not suitable for a black tie event or fancy soiree, as a solid navy blue suit is."
